It was a good start to the Games for the athletics team. It wasn’t too sunny for the half and nor too cloudy for the evening sprint program. The dulcet tones of Paul ‘Ingy’ Ingrouille (check the official programme) were heard for the first time over the tannoy at Fairways athletic centre and the of gold medals was begun for athletics and the Guernsey team by Lee Merrien’s individual victory in the half and the subsequent men’s team Gold (Mez 1st, Mike W 4th, Steve D 5th).
Hard to pick a highlight from the evening session. Kylie qualified (1st). Teresa qualifed (2nd). Josh qualifed (2nd, PB). Mike ‘Steve Ovett’ B qualified (PB), Will, after a physical race and a nervous wait, qualified. And then, the first medals ceremony. Turns out that not only is Ingy a commentator extraordinaire, but he is also shaping up well at spinning the national anthem discs. After a few teething problems, leading to the second play of Sarnia Cherie starting before all the medals were handed out and cut somewhat abruptly short (surely he can’t be sick of the tune already? – ed.) Ingy safely saw the IOW through 6 medal ceremonies and (he says) the thought of playing Sarnia Cherie with a Jersey competitor in the centre of the podium never crossed his mind.
Tomorrow (Monday 27th) begins with semi finals for the men’s 200 and 800 and heats of men’s 400mH.
PS and the marching music is…
