I want to break free.

There was a bit of controversy as Ben Wilen was spotted encouraging a Jersey competitor in this morning's Half Marathon but... hey.... that's what athletics is like. Mezza barely needed any encouragement as he sat in a gradually diminishing pack of runners during the first third of the race. Nor was the slightly worried question posed by Will Bodkin 'when will he break free?' entirely pertinent. Shortly after Mez disappeared into the distance with ease just before halfway.

Until that point Steve Dawes was in the leading group of 4 but did not look comfortable and, perhaps still suffering from a viral illness, gradually dropped off the pace.

There was a bit of nailbiting going on as, with an eye on the team competition, and a strong showing by the Isle Of Man duo(2nd & 6th), this medal seemed to be slipping away but the Swashbuckling Knight that is Mike Wilesmith was cutting through the field and by the line was up to a superb 4th place - not bad for a guy who was running 82 minutes a year ago. Steve held on bravely for 5th and, to be fair, would have secured the team gold even without Mike.

The Women's event was of a good standard (Jersey's Jo Gorrod was relegated to 4th) and taking into account the course was felt to be 2 minutes slow, Nikki Neal's 86 minute run would normally have got more than 7th.

From one extreme to the other - next up heats of the Women's 100m.
